Ten Little Soldier Boys

Ten little soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were Nine.

Nine little soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there was Eight.

Eight little soldier boys travelling to Devon;
One said he stayed there and then there were Seven.

Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six.

Six little soldier boys playing with a hive;
A bumble bee stung one and then there were Five.

Five little soldier boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were Four.

Four little soldier boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three.

Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were Two.

Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun;
One got frizzled up and then there was One.

One little soldier boy left all alone;
He went and hanged himself

And then there were None.

Frank Green, 1869

It IS a morbid poem.... I think it was written for the book by Agatha Cristie, "10 Little Niggers (with niggers in place of each "soldier boy"), but I'm not entirely sure... it may have been a nursery rhyme before that, but it WAS used in the book... The book is a murder mystery story, and is very creepy. A local school did a theater adaptation of the book tonight, and I swear, my friend Derek's face is going to give me nightmares!!

There's one mistake. It should be '...And then there WERE Eight.'
not was.

It was used in 'And Then There Were None' AKA '10 Little Niggers' by Agatha Christie.

I thought it was previously "10 little Indians".
But yes, it is called "And then there were none" now.
I actually was involved with a play too recently. I have always loved that book by Agatha Christie.
Yes it is morbid though

It was originally called 10 little niggers, then changed to 10 little Indians, and finally and then there were none

educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head.
The issue is something which too few people are speaking intelligently about.
I'm very happy I found this during my hunt for something relating to this.
